Under the sea

Under the sea

Quick quiz: where are the tallest mountains in the UK? If you said ‘Scotland’ you’d be right. Sort of.

It turns out that our tallest mountains are in the sea, to the west of Scotland. But they’re hard to spot because they lie more than a mile under water.

Until this year no one knew much about them. But then scientists sent some underwater robots to take a closer look. And what they found deep down in the cold dark waters came as quite a surprise.

Everyone had thought that the mountains were mostly covered in mud. But it turns out they were wrong. The mountains are home to all sorts of exciting plants and animals, some of which may never have been seen by humans before.
